My “Start Up” costs were 6k. Most of that cost was for the striping machine. The rest was for: 18″ Traffic Cones, a 30′ Measuring Tape, a few parking lot stencils, etc., It’s all listed in my book.
My “Shop” was my garage. That machine is the size of a lawn mower. I worked from my garage for (12) years. Many have an enclosed trailer. Some rent a “Self Storage” type garage. Gated with (24) hour access.
My “Inventory” is paint and stencils. I buy paint on the way to the job, after I have the job. Buy stencils, once, from me, as you grow. My handicap stencil is (34) years old.
I started “Part Time”. I painted on my day off. I went “Full Time” in year (4). Some stay Part Time.
I had work in “Both Economies”. When the economy is good…we all work. When the economy is slow, businesses will only re-stripe their lot. I still have work. Striping fit perfectly. I earned 4K in my first season. Then 13K, then 30K, then it started doubling. I take Winter off. Call me if you want. 614.237.8884.

My name is Dan Zurcher and I own The American Striping Company. I’ve been striping parking lots for (30) years and I’ve accomplished most of it alone. And, I also teach how I spray curbs, curves and even playground games. I teach how I layout “head-in” parking…angled parking…parallel parking…and stalls on a curve. Let’s not forget small intersections, including how I “block them down”.
